From tomorrow (Monday, August 18) there will be significant changes to the Farnham town centre road network as part of the ongoing Farnham Infrastructure Programme.
The upper section of Downing Street (north of Lower Church Lane) will close to through-traffic until November 1 to allow for safety and improvement works, including new paving, upgraded crossing points, loading bays, greening, seating, and cycle stands. This is a temporary semi-pedestrianisation, with the road reopening for the busy Christmas period. Works will resume in January, but it is not expected to require another full closure.
Pedestrian access will be maintained at all times, and vehicles will still be able to reach homes, businesses, and make deliveries. Shops will remain open as usual, with full access during their opening hours.
At the same time, the lower section of Downing Street (between Longbridge junction and Lower Church Lane) will permanently open to two-way traffic. This change allows vehicles leaving Waggon Yard car park to head directly towards south Farnham without travelling around the town centre.
There will be short-term overnight disruption tonight (Sunday, August 17) while the two-way system is implemented. Please follow directions from site teams and check travel apps such as Google Maps or Waze before setting off. Diversions will be in place throughout the closure, and local bus routes will be temporarily diverted, with The Borough bus stop moving just north of Castle Street junction.
