Working Together to Keep Traffic Moving Safely

At Surrey Highways, our teams work closely together every day to keep the road network safe, reliable and running smoothly. A recent incident in Ewell shows how this joined-up approach ensures we can act quickly when something unexpected happens.

In the early hours of 30 September 2025, a collision at the Kingston Road / Worcester Park Road junction caused serious damage to two traffic signal poles, with one falling across the pedestrian crossing. For safety, the crossing had to be closed immediately.

At 05.46am, Surrey Police alerted our standby officer, who quickly mobilised colleagues across Surrey Highways. By 08.40am, a traffic engineer was on site making the area electrically safe while teams from our 24/7 Emergency Hub and our Traffic Operations Maintenance Team installed barriers and cones to secure the junction.

We also dealt with an oil spillage, using a lane closure to keep people safe. Meanwhile, technical details and site photos were uploaded straight into our Fault Management System, allowing the wider team to plan repairs without delay.

With a 40-mph road, a nearby school and a busy bus stop, reopening a safe pedestrian route was a priority. By early afternoon, the damaged pole was carefully rotated away from the footway, allowing the crossing to reopen using the green man signal on the remaining pole – just in time for the school run.

Details of the vehicle involved were passed to our Damage to County Property (DCP) team so repair costs can be recovered, helping to protect public funds.

Permanent repairs began the next day, supported by temporary traffic and pedestrian signals to keep everyone safe. Thanks to the fast, coordinated effort from all Surrey Highways teams, the junction was fully restored quickly and safely.
