Guildford-based Sunrise Gurkha Sports Club held an enjoyable 10-mile community hike in the Surrey Hills on Saturday, September 12.

Happy hikers!

Navaraj Ghale from the club reports: “The date for the community hiking had been penned in our diary way in advance and obviously our trepidation was how the weather was going to play out that day.

“As morning dawned, it was rain that greeted us rather than a warm sunshine that we were so much hoping for.

“We were all rearing to go and so not even the lugubrious weather was going to dampen our spirit. To our pleasant surprise, luck was on our side and the weather turned out to be propitious for our hiking. This no doubt lifted our spirits even further.

The administrative team ensured everything was in place. At 1am all hikers, about 50 strong of various ages, gathered at the assembly point at Guidford’s Millbrook car park. With a final reminder on health and safety and the route, all hikers set off at 10.30am. The hikers had to report at the following check points: Pewley Down, Newlands Corner, St Martha’s Hill, Chantry Wood camp site, and the finishing point back at Millbrook.

Navarasj adds: “Everyone went through the check points on time without suffering any injuries. At check point four, the administrative team prepared and cooked a typical Gurkha curry for the hikers.

“The smell of the curry was enough to make everyone ravenous. When the curry was finally served, there was not a single person that did not go for a second helping. That shows how delicious the curry was and it was evident from the well satisfied faces.

“After lunch, activities like tug-o-war and shot-put were organised. Everyone participated with real enthusiasm and gusto despite the well filled tummies.

“It was competitive; but more than that, it was fun and enjoyable.

“After the fun-filled activities, everyone happily headed towards the finishing point.

“After a quick debrief and feedback everyone headed home looking happy and relaxed after an enjoyable day.

“Next year, we intend to change the hiking route and make it even more interesting.
