Another civic elder, Hon Alderman Mary Lloyd-Jones is reported to have died peacefully on Saturday, December 2017.
In a message to councillors it was stated: “It is with great regret and sadness, that once again in 2017, I have to inform you of the passing of one of our Honorary Aldermen.”
According to the Guildford Borough Council announcement, Ms Lloyd-Jones was first elected to the borough council in 1979 for the Ash Vale ward and served as a councillor for 12 years until 1991.
She served on a number of committees, including the Arts and Recreation Committee (1979-1983); the Housing and Health Committee (and its predecessor committee) (1979-1990) – which she chaired from 1987 to 1990; and the Policy and Resources Committee (1983 to 1990) and was Mayor of Guildford in 1990-91.
During her time as councillor, Ms Lloyd-Jones represented the council on the following outside bodies:
On December 8, 1995, the council conferred the title of Honorary Alderman on Mary in recognition of her eminent service rendered to the council both as a councillor and as past Mayor of the Borough.
It is understood that the funeral is to be a private family ceremony and that there will be a civic thanksgiving service on January 16, 2018, at Holy Trinity Church.

I am so sad that Mary has died despite political differences we became friends and Chris and I regularly met her shopping in Burpham with her companion. We always exchanged news of fellow former-councillors.
This has been a bad year for ex-councillors who were all stars in their own right.
RIP Mary ‘you were a game old bird to the end.’

What sad news to hear of Mary passing. She was such a lovely lady and was always interested in my charity work.
