Guildford residents are protesting the unexpected instalment of a large gantry on Pewley Hill reservoir, which residents say is polluting the panoramic views over Surrey.

Erected over the last few days by Thames Water, the structure – described as a “huge yellow horror” by a local resident – has already triggered objections from nearby households and further consternations from regular walkers and cyclists.

Particular concern has been raised over the apparent permanence of the structure, especially as no nearby resident received any written or oral communication from developers prior to its arrival.

One resident said, “If it’s temporary they should have let us know to allay concerns, if it’s permanent then there should have been a consultation. Neither of these have taken place and that’s not good enough!”.

The gantry, which looks over Surrey northwards towards Westminster and Canary Wharf, has widely been described as an “eye-sore”. Residents have shared anxieties about its possible pollution to numerous listed buildings in the area, the skyline and the wildflower meadow upon which it stands.

“It is hugely disturbing to see the yellow frame out of our window,” another resident shared. “It completely ruins the beautiful views that first attracted us to the hill and no doubt would devalue all the properties who are suffering from this eyesore structure.”

Further question have been raised over planning permission, given historically rigid rules for developments in the designated area.

“Several property developments on Pewley Hill were subject to rigorous planning processes and had to jump through hoops to get passed – if this gantry is supposed to be permanent, why has it been allowed to be erected without the same scrutiny?” said another resident.

When approached by The Dragon for comment, Thames Water refused to answer specific questions, stating: “Given the number of enquiries we get, we do not have the resources to assist hyperlocal titles at this time.”

Guildford’s MP, Zöe Franklin, has been advised of Thames Water’s failure to respond.

While the nature of the gantry remains unknown, Thames Water’s latest press release noted that they are currently experiencing a sharp rise in water demand from the heatwave. In response they are investing a big upgrade to their local infrastructure.

“We are replacing and strengthening pipes and infrastructure to reduce leaks and improve resilience. At the same time, our teams are working around the clock to keep supplies flowing today, fixing hundreds of leaks every week, monitoring the network 24/7 and moving water to where it is needed most”, they wrote.

However, residents warn that if the structure remains, objections are expected to climb sharply once families return from half-term holidays.
