Some parts of Surrey will head to the polls to cast their vote in July. Three by-elections will be taking place for Surrey County Council over the next month to fill empty seats. The results will give an indication of the current political mood in the county.
The newly-elected councillors will serve until local government reorganisation is completed and Surrey County Council is dissolved – potentially May 2027.
Will Forster, Liberal Democrat MP for Woking, stepped down from his borough and county council roles on May 29, leaving a space free for someone new. The Woking South by-election will take place on Thursday, July 10.
Official nominations of people standing have been announced and are available on Surrey County Council’s website. Members from the Conservative Party, Green Party, Labour, Lib Dems and Reform UK are all standing.
The county council ward of Hinchley Wood, Claygate and Oxshott is also vacant after the death of Cllr Mark Sugden on May 19.
Another by-election will take place for the Addlestone Division after the death of Cllr John Furey, on June 10.
Nominations are still underway for both wards so no names have been officially announced. The by-election is expected to take place on July 31, during the summer holidays.
Voters are being reminded to take ID to their polling station and those in the specified ward or divisions can apply for a postal vote.
