Launch of On-Line Art Auction for the Prostate Project

The annual on-line art auction in aid of the Prostate Project charity was launched in great style with an event at The County Club in Guildford High Street.

Hosted by radio presenter Peter Gordon, the afternoon attracted an audience including former drummer for the Who, Kenney Jones, and ex-Motown Records executive and music producer, Les Spaine, both patrons of the Guildford-based charity.

The Prostate Projects says that the money raised by the on-line auction will go directly to supporting the world-leading research currently taking place at University of Surrey.

A number of the research team were on hand at the event, fielding questions about their work and explaining the value of their investigations into the causes, diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer.

Alf Turner, who chairs the Prostate Project, addressed the audience, speaking about the importance of research and the stark facts about prostate cancer.

He said: ‘The money we raise, with the help of our supporters and patrons, goes not only to initiatives such as the new mobile PSA blood testing clinic that we will be launching later this year, but also to the vital research taking place right here in Surrey.

“Prostate cancer kills more than 12,000 men in the UK every year, we can and we will reduce this number, saving and prolonging the lives of husbands, dads, uncles and brothers.”

The general manager of The County Club, Kevin Lorimer, spoke of his delight at hosting the event. He said: “It was a pleasure to welcome so many local business leaders, scientists and charity patrons to the County Club for such a worthwhile cause.

“We were able to transform our Doric Restaurant into an art gallery for the day, and judging by the response from the audience, I am sure that bidding will be brisk.”

The auction was, as ever, organised and curated by Dr Nicola Annels, senior research fellow at the University of Surrey. She said: “It was wonderful to see so many people here, attracted by the quality of the artwork so generously donated by some exceptional local artists.

“This year’s collection is better than ever, and we are confident of beating our previous best effort of just over £5,000.”

Alf Turner concluded the afternoon by thanking the artists, The County Club and Nick Wyschna, owner of The Fallen Angel on Guildford High Street, for their boundless generosity and remarkable support.

The online auction runs until May 5, and with reserve prices as low as £10, there is still time to help a wonderful cause and grab a real bargain.
