Learn All About Guildford’s History With Matthew Alexander

Twenty classes exploring the history of Guildford presented by Matthew Alexander (the borough’s honorary remembrancer and former museum curator) are taking place this autumn running through to March.

Each week there will be a formal classroom session at Guildford Museum followed by coffee and a visit to a historic building in the town centre.

Classes begin on Wednesday, September 13, with the sessions split across two 10-week terms.

Topic covered will include Guildford’s geology and pre-history, the Saxon period, the castle, the friary, the wool trade, education, George Abbot, coaching inns, religion, timber-framed buildings, the civil war, the Wey Navigation, mills, markets, the borough government, military history, Holy Trinity Church, industry, railways, hospitals, population and Lewis Carroll.

The Wednesday classes begin at 10am at the museum in Quarry Street and the course costs £110, payable in one or two instalments.
