Lest We Forget: Services Of Remembrance

Services to remember our war dead are taking place acrosss the borough of Guildford later this week.

On Friday, November 11, a two-minute silence will be observed in Guildford High Street, with a short service of remembrance held on the balcony of the Guildhall.

Worplesdon Parish Council has a wreath laying ceremony on Friday, November 11, at 10.45am at the war memorial at the junction of Clay Lane and Queenhythe Road in Jacobs Well. Tea and coffee, provided by the Jacobs Well Residents’ Association, will be served in Jacobs Well Village Hall after the service.

Charlotteville’s annual service of remembrance takes place at the war memorial in Addison Road on Saturday, November 12, at 3pm.

Among those being remembered will be four men from Charlotteville who died 100 years ago in the First World War. Frank Hill, who lived at 16 Cooper Road; Ernest Jelly, 67 Addison Road; Frederick Newman, 54 Addison Road; and Henry Siver, 113 Addison Road.

Afterwards, tea will be available in Addison Court lounge where there will be a display about the history of Charlotteville and the stories of local men of the First and Second World Wars commemorated on the memorial and others who contributed to the war effort.

On Sunday, November 13, at 10.50am, a civic procession will leave the Guildhall in the High Street and walk to Holy Trinity Church for the annual of service of remembrance. Following the service the procession will join representatives from local service organisations as they proceed to the Castle Grounds for the wreath-laying ceremony at the war memorial.

Also on Sunday, November 13, councillors, uniformed and voluntary organisations will assemble at the Ash Centre car park by 10.15am to parade to the Ash War Memorial, led by a lone piper at 10.35am. The service of remembrance will be led by the local clergy accompanied by the North East Hampshire Area School Band.

The parade will then return to the Ash Centre for dismissal by the parade marshal. Tea and coffee will be served in the Ash Centre after the service and parade, everyone is welcome.
