The entrance to the Accident & Emergency department at the Royal Surrey County Hospital

From Jules Cranwell

On Sunday, I was advised by 111 to take my wife to Royal Surrey A&E.

We called and were asked to attend at 11.30am.

I must say, we were not looking forward to the experience, given the residents’ strike, and proximity to Christmas. But I could not be more impressed.

I dropped my wife off, and by the time I had parked the car and joined her, she had been triaged, had blood taken, and a canula inserted.

We had a wait of 1½ hours for the bloods be analysed. She was then taken immediately for a CT scan and placed on a drip. We had another 1½ hour wait for the CT scan to be studied, and conclusions made.

She was then taken to an acute ward to await a surgeon to determine treatment, and the necessity for an overnight stay.

She saw a surgeon by 5pm, who explained the results, and the need to remain in overnight and was then taken to a general ward, to await a further consultation with the surgeon in the morning.

The staff were all highly professional, courteous and kind.

A&E was extremely busy, but the staff were unflappable.

I just wanted to put this out there, as a huge thank you to our awesome NHS and Royal Surrey in particular.
