In response to: First Past the Post Still Has Its Merits
Andy Berriman puts forward a thoughtful case on the shortcomings of First Past the Post. Though I still have to disagree that Proportional Representation would be an improvement given our political landscape.
I see two issues, firstly that it would result in fragmented governance with extreme groups likely holding the power to block or pass based purely upon self-interest. Secondly, that the electorate would have to understand their responsibilities are different – and sadly I think this message would fall on deaf ears.
Fortunately, we are a way off an extreme group holding significant power. It is my hope that those of extreme views that have taken some local positions will do their best for local people; my expectations, that their narrow extreme views will distract them from local service, will have consequences that can not be ignored by any voter.
I do think that any electorial change needs to be accompanied by effective education about the impact. I just don’t see how this could be delivered without being overwhelmed by X (Twitter) or Facebook or any other number of social media channels.
