Letter: Can Anyone Help With Information About My Grandfather?

Published on: 21 Sep, 2018

From Robert Woodhouse

I’ve been told my grandfather was at a camp or base near Shalford in 1941 as an AA [anti-aircraft] gunner in the Royal Artillery.

Can anybody give any information about this area and time please?

I have been told that around that time my house was requisitioned to house soldiers. In Shalford when there was only one large manor house, plus mine and another nearby. I wish I could help more but I have been trying for many years to find more information.

No luck. My own deeds only start in 1960 when the redevelopment of new houses was almost over. My house was built in 1875.

I have also tried to extract information from the Dorchester area, like Robert Woodhouse, concerning my grandfather. Sadly I have never found local authorities in the least bit interested in local history.

Pearl Catlin might find the information that you seek at The National Archives at Kew in the requisitioned property register ref: WORK 50/29.

No guarantees in finding it, though, as WW2 records don’t always survive.

She could also try the “Discovery catalogue” search on the TNA website: http://www.nationlaarchives.gov.uk
