Surrey County Council has launched a consultation exercise on its plans for the expansion of Ash Grange Primary School from September 2028.

The proposal is to expand the Ash school from a one-form entry to a two-form entry school.

The expansion will be funded by Section 106 contributions, which have been made by developers building homes in the Ash area, and from the School Basic Need scheme. Basic need capital funding is allocated by the Government to local authorities to create new school places.

If the proposal is agreed, the expansion will be phased, with the school growing year on year. This means that existing year groups would remain their present size and each new reception intake would increase from 30 to 60 pupils from September 2028 onwards.

At present within the Ash and Tongham planning area, there are 240 reception places available across six schools. For September 2026, schools in the area received a combined total of 271 first preference reception applications – 31 more applications than there are places available.

In support of the application, the school says in a statement: “The site offers sufficient space for expansion, making it a practical and sustainable option for meeting the area’s growing need for school places.

“We will be holding public meetings for families, local communities and any other interested parties to discuss the proposal and provide their feedback. Anyone who wishes to come is welcome at the meetings, and you do not have to have a child at the school to attend.”

Two meetings will take place on the same day: Thursday July 2nd at 2pm and 7pm at the school.

This consultation closes on Monday, July 13th. A statement from Surrey County Council said: “We now want to hear your comments on the proposal. Your input and feedback are important in helping us to further understand the views of the children, parents/carers, staff and local community.”

Asked by the Guildford Dragon for details of of the S106 funding, the council said: “We cannot currently share a breakdown or split as this will be covered via a separate governance process that is not yet finalised. We will be able to share this in future once we have the details.”
