Letter: Criticising the Lib Dems for Tory Failures Takes Some Chutzpah

From George Potter

Lib Dem borough councillor for Burpham

In response to: The Shocking £20m+ Cost of Cancelling the Guildford Park Road Development

What Cllr Philip Brooker conveniently forgets to mention, in his opinion piece, is that the development on Guildford Park Road was originally meant to have be completed, under his tenure as housing portfolio holder, in 2018!

It really does take some chutzpah to blame the Lib Dems for a project that was so fundamentally flawed that it still hadn’t seen a single shovel in the ground by the time of the 2019 election. Starting again, rather than ploughing on with a directionless and ill-conceived scheme, was the only sensible thing to do.

Given the Tory record of major project fiascos in Guildford, from the Walnut Tree Bridge to Guildford Park Road to Chester Bridge over the railway in Ash Bridge to North Street, it’s astounding that they have the brass neck to try to weaponise them against the subsequent administrations that actually sorted all of them out.
