From Brian Creese
On Tuesday (September 15), One Guildford held a public meeting at Guildford Baptist Church.
One Guildford is a cross-party group dedicated to promoting democracy and equality, and to campaign for Guildford being an inclusive community which welcomes everyone regardless of race, ethnicity or religion.
There was an excellent turnout and three engaging speakers, each of whom picked up on an issue around intolerance: political, social and economic.
Anne Milton (former Guildford MP) talked about the threat to democracy, Amelia Hadfield (Surrey University) on the issues of discrimination aimed at international students and Joanne Tester (Guildford Action) on how the current climate affects the most deprived communities in Guildford.
There was a lively and positive discussion which examined how the group might progress. The overall feeling was that One Guildford has a role to play in the local community, and we hope to formalise the group soon and organise further events.
