See: ‘Emergency’ Roadworks Commence Without Warning, Closing Portsmouth Road

Like many residents living on Portsmouth Road, I encountered an unexpected road closure outside Ye Olde Ship Inn (having travelled just 200 metres from home).

Being so close to the road closure is akin to being stranded, compounded with various other pop-up temporary lights – it reminds me of playing “Whack-a-Mole”. Just as you deal with one you are met with another.

Having previously been told the roadworks were postponed the unexpected and unannounced road closure resulted in my having to U-turn and then face the unattended roadworks, with temporary traffic lights, by Lawn Road before having to make a lengthy diversion via the A31 to get to an appointment in Godalming.

There are also temporary lights on the approach to Godalming but they, at least, are undertaking visible work.

Having attended to my business in Godalming I attempted to plan how I would return home.
My options were limited and relying on my satnav to checking timings and other potential roadworks, I turned onto Broadford Road from Peasmarsh and then the A281 towards Guildford.

The detour around Portsmouth Road has, inevitably, put a strain on the A281 compounded with temporary lights near Millmead Car Park.

Planned engineering works due to commence at precisely the same location, the Sandy Lane – Portsmouth Road junction, on the very same date, 28th July, were recently postponed without explanation.

It is beyond bare-faced cheek by SGN to say that the current works are due to an “emergency”.
They must take the residents (and the county council) for absolute idiots.

Is there any recourse for this blatant deception?

Yes! Renationalise all public utilities without compensation they are mainly owned or have been by asset-stripping private equity firms who just take everything having overloaded the companies with debt.

Make it a requirement for these companies and their investors to settle any debts before they are allowed to dispose of them and their assets and require them to be based/registered in this country not the Cayman islands or other tax havens.
