Letter: GBC Does Not Have £55m Unspent in Section 106 Money

From George Potter

Lib Dem county and borough councillor

In response to: £55m Earmarked for Benefit of the Community ‘Still Unspent’, Says Campaigning Councillor

“The council’s statement said the current value of available S106 funds held by Guildford Borough Council is £13,954,054.60.”

“But commenting on this figure, Sue Wyeth-Price maintains that it does not include approximately £41 million that is pending.”

So, in short, the borough council does not have £55 million then, since Cllr Wyeth-Price is counting money which will fall due in the future (eg from Wisley Airfield) but that is not yet due to, for instance, the fact that not a single house has been built at Wisley Airfield then.

Why write an article claiming there is £55 million “unspent” when the article itself contains an admission that that is not the case?

Why is Wyeth-Price making claims to the media which she knows to be misleading at best?

Money received, but not spent, is absolutely worth focusing on and campaigning about. Campaigning about money which cannot possibly be due to be paid yet is ridiculous.

Perhaps if Wyeth-Price focused on the real scandal (£30 million of unspent money sat with the county council) then this might be a useful crusade. But at this point it just looks like her only real agenda is to misinform the public, since why else would someone make claims that are demonstrably misleading and inaccurate?
