Letter: Monitoring Officer Should Have Reacted to ‘Skew’ Comment

From Paul Spooner

chair of the Godalming & Ash Conservative Association

In response to: ‘Resign’ Call To Waverley’s Leader Over Remark About Devolution Caught On Video

This was clearly broadcast in error and does demonstrate the poor governance that exists at Waverley BC and very likely in Guildford, given the same CEO is in place there too.

The monitoring officer also failed to react and I would have expected her to politely remind the leader that ‘skewing’ officer reports should not be requested or actioned!

Residents expect offcers to be impartial and balanced. I do not believe either currently apply at Waverley or Guildford Borough Councils.

Double standards again from Mr Spooner.

When he led Guildford council, officers were so politicised that they even managed to get his highly controversial Local Plan approved during a period of local election purdah.

Four years earlier, the monitoring officer had refused to further investigate the Tory group’s deputy leader despite a clear steer from the Bar Standards Board. It was only thanks to action taken by individual residents that she was later convicted of several crimes.

A bit rich for Mr Spooner to complain about scewing of results, given the highly biased interpretaion of his sham “consultation” on the Local Plan.
