In response to: Pavement Parking a Concern Frequently Raised by Guildford Residents
Please find a couple of examples of pavement parking my wife has experienced here in Burpham.
In the case of the DHL courier, he was very apologetic and moved his van without hesitation and parked it on the pavement on the other side of the road!

These selfish people need to be issued with parking fines and payment should be enforced. This will help to alleviate the issue. If resource is an issue it should be easy to make it self-funding. The county council is too slow or ineffectual to make a difference for this kind of matter.

There was a time when I complained about this behaviour every week or so. The police were always helpful and spoke to the perpetrators on a few occasions.
One day they just stopped. Presumably they’d been instructed there was no money for dealing with such matters.
A huge SUV completely blocked the path at night forcing pedestrians into the road where they could not see oncoming traffic and nor could they be seen. The only interest the police showed was to ascertain if the vehicle had been damaged.
An even larger motorhome blocked the path for several hours. The police response was “people have to learn to cross the road”.

With regard to the ‘Nova’ van I rang SCC Parking who said they would only do something if they had someone in the area. I gave up then, it was easier to do some door knocking to find out where the driver was.
I also sent a photo to the company concerned. I did get a response about company policy not to do this and they would speak to the driver.

I sometimes point out to culprits that, quite apart from the danger to pedestrians, especially those pushing buggies etc, and the damage to pavements with consequent risk to legitimate users, the drivers’ vehicles are actually far more likely to be scraped by both lanes of traffic squeezing through together than if they park squarely on the road so other drivers have to take their turn to pass. And everyone will be delayed far more if there is a a scrape and they have to swap details etc than if everyone waits their turn to pass in an orderly manner.

Pavement parking was a consideration when deciding parking policy for the Burpham Neighbourhood Plan because people have and need their personal transport. If there is inadequate parking then, sorry, there should be no additional building.
Weyside Urban Village, at my last look, had 1,550 accommodation units with less than 1,300 parking places, the argument being no one has cars these days. We’ll see.

The latest culprit spotted parking halfway across an already narrow pavement today was a police car!
