Letter: Poor Ash – But What About Ockham?

From David Roberts

New Homes Plan Submitted for Manor House Site in Ash Green

53 homes in Ash? That’s bad, but please spare a thought for poor, picturesque little Ockham, soon to be submerged in 2,400.

The sheer scale of this is a scandal that has never had the attention it deserves.

Well its not just 53 houses in Ash, they have had significantly more than this with all the various schemes over the years. At least Ockham has the nearby A3 / M25 infrastructure!

Can Mr Roberts explain where the number of 2,400 homes has come from? I understand Taylor Wimpey are building 1,730 units. I think there is another smaller scheme next to TW’s site but this is not 670 homes.

There are in fact three schemes, of which the Taylor Wimpey one is the biggest.

Housing is one of the major problems facing young people and it won’t be solved by existing home owners moaning about how many are being built on their patch. Aldershot and Farnborough have already had built thousands of new homes and Rushmoor has an overall supply of identifiable and deliverable housing land for 2,981 net new dwellings for the period 2024-2029 (1st April 2024 – 31st March 2029).

The change from a pleasant quiet area to a noisy urban one might be unpleasant, but the grandkids need somewhere to put down roots,

Yes, and the even closer Ockham Lane, Old Lane and Ockham Road North lack of infrastructure.

Wisley Airfield has very good connections, with direct access, to the new Wisley Lane as well as access to the A3 Junction. Here residents will easily be able to travel north onto the A3 and travel around the new Junction 10 if they want to go south or they can travel via Ripley and join the southbound exit at West Clandon. The site also makes use of the already built on airfield.

I am afraid there is no sympathy from me – we all need to take our share of housing and this is one of the more logical developments I have seen.
