Letter: The Flood Alleviation Scheme Is Ill-conceived At Best

In response to: Council Endorses Flood Alleviation Scheme But Hears Cautionary Note On Funding

The Guildford Flood Alleviation Scheme is ill-conceived at best. At worst it’s driven by opportunistic greed.

It means selling off public assets so that private developers can build blocks of flats while passing the additional water run-off down stream!

Being able to walk anywhere in town in 15 minutes is an unachievable expectation, and even if it were not it fails to account for those not living in the new rabbit hutches in town. Not everyone outside Guildford has easy public transport options and being able to park is good for business and town life.

Perhaps the local government reorganisation is an opportunity for a reset, but I fear it will be owned by the same faces and interests.

We risk becoming a reflection of Woking town centre and Basildon New Town.
