Letter: There Is No Value in 20mph Proposal

From Angela Richardson

former Conservative MP for Guildford

In response to: 20mph Limit for Cranleigh

Councils would be much more financially effective if there weren’t so many pots of money ring-fenced for specific purposes.

Just because there is a pot of money, doesn’t mean you have to spend it. If it was pooled, basic services could be better met. The majority of people are already travelling sensibly on Parsonage Road in Cranleigh and the surrounding roads because of the number of schools and elderly present.

Residents are self-enforcing. The survey evidences it.

I understand that many residents like the idea of 20mph and the reasons listed in the article, but it doesn’t add anything other than something for sitting councillors to say they have achieved in a leaflet ahead of elections.

But what have they actually achieved? Simply a continuation of current behaviour at an additional cost to taxpayers.

Given the financial difficulties that councils are always complaining about, wouldn’t it be better to reform how financial allocation works? Yes, this means challenging and lobbying government departments. Surely something that needs to be done on behalf of residents.

There is next to no value for money in this proposal.
