Letter: Will the Tory Group Stand By Their Leader or the People of Guildford?

Cllr Stephen Mansbridge, council leader and leader of the Tory group.

From George Dokimakis

Secretary of the Guildford Labour Party

Somehow the news about the organisation of the petition on whether Guildford should have an elected mayor does not feel like a surprise.

During the last full Guildford Borough Council meeting, Cllr Mansbridge called for more scrutiny of the Executive and especially him as a leader.

Now we find out that, in answer to a question in full council, he failed to reveal what he knew about a petition that has the potential to be a massive waste of money to Guildford. A petition that increasingly seems like a vanity project to the leader of the Executive at the expense of everyone else in Guildford.

A number of questions are being raised about this and as more information is unearthed, the more muddier the waters.

There is one pertinent and prominent question right now.

Will the Conservative group stand with their leader of the Executive or will the Conservative group do the right thing by the people of Guildford and present a vote of no confidence?

I think Mr Dokimakis will know the answer to that.

I agree with the secretary of the Guildford Labour Party.

It is a sorry state of affairs when our borough councillors have to be constantly reminded of their duty to do the right thing by Guildford.

In my opinion Cllr Mansbridge should have gone a long time ago. His behaviour is unacceptable and yet the Guildford borough councillors do accept and seem to support his behaviour and fail to stand up to him. Why?

Our borough councillors need to ask themselves why they stood as councillors in the first place. Did they do so to represent their constituents or to be ruled by the Mansbridge regime that is GBC at the moment?

I urge all borough councillors to grow a backbone, man up and stand up against Cllr Mansbridge.
