Guildford’s architecture and culture can be enjoyed for free during Heritage Open Days this weekend.
There will be more than 100 events and activities in the borough to choose from between Thursday and Sunday, September 10 and 13, including museum open days, theatre tours and vineyard visits.
There will also be guided tours, activities, talks and exhibitions.
Joining the programme for the first time this year will be Priors Field School, Farley Heath Roman Temple, Puttenham Eco Barn and the University of Surrey.
Members of The Queen’s Royal West Surrey Regiment Re-enactment Society will be in the High Street on Saturday handing out leaflets about the society, and its main event is on the Sunday when they will be at Henley Fort from 11am to 3pm.
There will be a number of soldiers demonstrating the uniforms and weapons of the Victorian period, from the 1850s right through to the First World War.
Commanding Officer James Dix said: “We will also have a number of Victorian and 1940s civilians attending, and a World War Two jeep.
“As an added bonus the team from the Surrey Infantry Museum will also be joining us with their display boards and artefacts rescued from the fire at Clandon Park.”
There will also be rare opportunity to visit the borough’s heritage collections store at its Woking Road Depot.
Other museums opening their doors include the Surrey Police Museum, Army Medical Services Museum and the National Rifle Association Museum.
The usual favourites, including Guildford Castle, Wanborough Great Barn, the Guildhall, the Victorian Schoolroom in Castle Street, Watts Gallery, Guildford House and the Royal Grammar School, will be open over the weekend.
A brochure is available from the Tourist Information Centre at 155 High Street, Guildford. You can also download a copy at www.guildford.gov.uk/
Guildford Borough Council will be sharing photos from the events through its social media feeds on Monday next week, including a Facebook gallery and on Pinterest. If people would like to submit their photos from events throughout the weekend they can be tweeted to @GuildfordBC and emailed to pr@guildford.gov.uk
The event is organised by Guildford Borough Council, Guildford Town Guides and the Guildford Society and sponsored by Thesis Asset Management.
