Reports of disarray at the top tier of the Liberal Democrat-run Guildford Borough Council have reached the Guildford Dragon NEWS in the last 24 hours.
Although there has been no official announcement, the threat of resignation by a senior member of the Executive on Wednesday is believed to have triggered a major upheaval yet to be clarified.
But despite the threat of a resignation, which corroborated reports say was circulated to all Lib Dem group councillors, the matter was not raised at a party group meeting on Thursday evening, leading to speculation that the disagreement causing the threat had been resolved.
However yesterday evening (Friday, March 13) further unconfirmed reports have emerged that major changes to the council Executive could be underway.
Council leader Julia McShane seemed reluctant, in a recent interview with Dragon editor Martin Giles, to admit that the reason for Executive Committee changes were matters of public interest, not just internal party matters. [insert link]
Last year saw the dismissal from the Cabinet of Cllr George Potter, who had stood against Cllr McShane for the post of leader of the Lib Dem Group at Millmead in May, and the apparently unexpected and sudden simultaneous resignation of two Cabinet members in November. [insert link]
Then in January this year Cllr Catherine Houston, clearly angry, denied she had “stepped down” from the Executive, as claimed in an official announcement, telling all GBC councillors that she had been dismissed without being given a reason for her dismissal by the council leader.
The action was said to have left Lib Dem group members puzzled and some unhappy, even angry, but McShane survived. Whether she will remain in post following this further dissension remains to be seen.
One of the current areas of disagreement between members of the Executive causing the current rift is said to be a decision on how to handle the possible formation of a town council. The result of a public consultation has shown that views are fairly evenly split and there are strong views said to be held on both sides of the argument.
Any further developments will be reported as they are made known but any official announcement is not expected until Monday.

The council papers on the councils website for Mondays meeting show a marginal result of the public consultation for whether a parish council should be set up with 47 per cent against and 46 per cent for with 3 per cent undecided.
However the turn out was only 6 per cent, which is pretty poor as local elections and ballots go. As such, the council cannot demonstrate that there is sufficient community support for setting up a parish council.
Yet despite that, two Executive members have put forward a motion to set one up. Leaving the council wide open to judicial review if they make that decision. Although the funniest thing is they have now lost the power to do so and it is now the decision of West Surrey Council.
I can imagine that is causing a few disagreements within the Executive!
