Man Charged with Attempted Murder Following Crossbow Attack at University

June 5: A man has been charged with attempted murder following a serious assault in Guildford yesterday.

Officers were called to reports of a man being shot with a crossbow at Manor Park Student Village, Guildford, at around 10am on Thursday June 4.

Almunthir Daqamah, 21, has been charged with attempted murder, possession of an offensive weapon, two counts of possession of a bladed article and possession of Class B drugs.

Daqamah is a Saudi national who was a former student at the University of Surrey.

He has been remanded in custody to appear at Guildford Magistrates’ Court this morning.

The victim, a campus safety officer in his 50s, remains in a stable condition in hospital.

Chief Superintendent Jon Groenen said: “We know how concerning this incident is, both for the University community and for local residents here in Guildford, and our officers are working at pace to establish the full circumstances of what occurred.

“There is nothing to suggest this incident is terror-related and we are not looking for anyone else in connection with it.

“We continue to work closely with the University and at this time, I would ask people to refrain from speculating online to preserve the integrity of the investigation. If you have any information that could assist our enquiries, please contact us directly.

“The victim is thankfully now in a stable condition. He remains in hospital and we continue to provide support to his family.”

A University of Surrey spokesperson said: “We have been informed that our colleague is now in a stable condition and our entire community is relieved to hear this news. We wish him a full and speedy recovery.

“We also want to take this opportunity to thank our Campus Safety team. They responded with professionalism and courage to this incident, and their commitment to keeping this community safe is something we are deeply proud of. Our thoughts are with all of them.”

June 4: A 21-year-old Saudi national has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder following reports of a man being shot with a crossbow at the University of Surrey.

A man in his 50s, a member of our the university’s campus safety team, was taken to hospital.

Officers were called to Manor Park Student Village, Guildford, at around 10am this morning (June 4)

The arrested suspect is currently in police custody. At 10.50am today a significant emergency services presence was said to remain in place but access to the Royal Surrey County Hospital was unaffected.

Chief Superintendent Jon Groenen said: “I appreciate that this incident will cause concern amongst our local communities, and I can reassure that we are not looking for anyone else in relation to this incident. We are working closely with the university as our investigation progresses.

“The suspect was detained at the scene shortly after the incident and an investigation is now underway to establish the circumstances of the assault.”

He continued: “The victim remains in a serious condition in hospital and his next of kin are aware and are being supported by officers.”

A University of Surrey spokesperson said: “At approximately 9.50 am this morning, an incident took place on our Manor Park campus. Police attended and a man was arrested. A member of our campus safety team was seriously injured and is receiving medical care.

“The police are not looking for anyone else in connection with this incident. Surrey Police are leading the investigation and we are giving them our full support.”
