Cash is believed to have been stolen in a robbery carried out at a newsagent in Effingham Junction today.

Police officers attended the premises on Forest Road after reports of a robbery just after 11.10am. It is reported that items were thrown around the shop before a man left with what is believed to be a quantity of cash.

Witnesses reported seeing a man run from the shop. He is described as being white, wearing black clothing and carrying a black rucksack.

Sergeant Joel Brady is urging anyone who may have been in the immediate area who may have seen any suspicious activity to contact Surrey Police. He said: “Thankfully no-one was injured during this incident but understandably the shopkeeper has been left very shaken by this ordeal.

“I would urge members of public who saw anyone acting suspiciously in the area this morning to get in touch. Any information, however small it may seem, might assist with the investigation.”

A man in his 40s from East Horsley has been arrested on suspicion of robbery. He remains in custody.

Anyone with information is asked to call Surrey Police on 101 quoting reference 45170002364 or use the online reporting system found at http://www.surrey.police.uk/. Alternatively the independent charity Crimestoppers can be contacted anonymously on 0800 555 111.
