There were 27 Guildford borough recipients of this year’s Mayor’s Award for Service to the Community (2026).

The award recognises volunteers as well as organisations who selflessly give their time to strengthen and enrich the community.

The annual award ceremony took place at the County Club in Guildford on Saturday afternoon, March 14, with the Mayor, Cllr Howard Smith, presenting each recipient their award.

Guildford Borough Council said: “These volunteers are widening access to sport, arts and culture, improving health and wellbeing, protecting the environment, and strengthening local democracy.

“Many of those honoured on the day have been volunteering for decades so that children, families, and older or vulnerable members of their communities can take part in activities, feel included in society, and remain healthy.

“Volunteering reaches across all generations, with this year’s youngest award recipient being just five years old. He volunteers with his father litter picking to help keep their neighbourhood clean.”

The Mayor added: “Where would our communities be without the dedication and commitment of volunteers like these? From weekly sessions to monthly groups and seasonal events these individuals work tirelessly for the good of our communities.

“It’s incredible to discover that many of those receiving awards this year have been actively volunteering for over 20 years, continuing traditions and supporting organisations over many decades.

“I know they do not seek recognition for the work that they do, but it is clearly appreciated.”

Citations for each nomination were read out, and as well as the individual awards, the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre received an award on behalf of its 85 volunteers. They each contribute around 12 hours per month to support audience members.

After the formal proceedings there was a musical performance from singer Karl Sonoy.
