A man who was brandishing what appeared to be a long metal spike in Bridge Street in Guildford town centre on Thursday evening was arrested by police.
A security guard at Tesco Express had dialled 999. Passers-by were visibly alarmed by the incident.
A police statement said: “We can confirm police were called to an incident on Bridge Street last night at around 8.30pm. A 36-year-old man was arrested for being in possession of an offensive weapon. He remains in police custody at this time.”
