Multiple Offences Reported at Merrow Downs ‘Gathering’

Offences including sexual assault, robbery, possession of an offensive weapon and assault, were reported to have occured at an unplanned gathering of around 100-150 young people on Merrow Downs.
Police were called to the incident on Sunday evening (September 18), at around 10.30pm.
Two men, aged 22 and 24, were arrested on suspicion of robbery, possession of an offensive weapon, assault causing actual bodily harm and sexual assault. They have since been released under investigation.
Guildford Borough Commander Alick James has said: “We appreciate that this incident may have caused disruption and concern amongst the local community and I would like to reassure you that we carrying out a full and thorough investigation into a number of offences which were alleged to have taken place.”
Investigating officer Detective Constable Pete Coe appealed for witnesses. He said: “This was a large-scale gathering which has then escalated into a situation where numerous offences have been alleged.
“If you were present during this incident, and believe you may have been a victim of a crime, or a witness to offences, then I urge you to come forward to assist the investigation.
“Likewise, if you are aware of any video or photographic footage of the incident, please contact us and share this with us so we can establish what has happened and ensure that any offenders are brought to justice.”
