The Barnes Big Band – playing at The Hog’s Back Brewery in June

This is a milestone year for the Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice in Farnham. Its new hospice will open this spring, providing much-needed care in a community of over 500,000 people across Surrey and Hampshire.

To celebrate the occasion this June, the hospice care charity is organising a special fund-raising event in which people can come and listen to The Barnes Big Band, a 16-piece jazz orchestra.

The event will take place on Sunday, June 14, at the Hog’s Back Brewery, Tongham.

The band will be accompanied by top jazz singer Vanessa Rose, performing a wide range of jazz from the music of Count Basie right through to more modern compositions written specially for the Barnes Big Band.

Among the drinks on sale will be the Tuckwell Tribute Ale, a special  brew created by The Hog’s Back Brewery to celebrate the opening of the new hospice.

Laura Moody, events manager at Phyllis Tuckwell, said: “Following the success of our Jazz at the Hampton Estate event, The Barnes Big Band were keen to support us again, and we’re delighted that the Hogs Back Brewery have kindly offered to host this wonderful summer event.”

A £6 million fundraising target was reached to build the new hospice. The purpose-built hospice will be larger and better equipped than the building it will replace. It will have a specialist 18 bedded unit to care for those with the most intensive medical and nursing needs. There will also be a therapy suite and treatment rooms, an education suite, a café, a rehabilitation suite and counselling rooms.

Laura Moody added: “We’re very grateful to Hall Hunter Partnership, who are sponsoring this event, and for their incredible support for Phyllis Tuckwell. This is going to be a fantastic event.”

Tickets cost £25 and can be bought online at www.pth.org.uk/jazz-at-the-hbb
