Drivers could be forced to slow down in a Surrey neighbourhood as new speed limits have been put forward. Some roads in Park Barn and Westborough in Guildford could be part of new slower-speed zones.
Surrey County Council is asking people for their views on 20mph speed limits across Park Barn Drive and surrounding roads. Drivers might have to kill their speed with only signs enforcing the action.
The aim, the council said, is to make streets safer and more pleasant for people travelling on foot, bike and especially children heading to and from school. Surrey County Council added that lower speed limits can help to reduce personal injury collisions and improve road safety for all users.
The roads proposed to have a 20mph limit include: Park Barn Drive; Southway; Applegarth Avenue; Barnwood Road; Oakfields; Woodside Road; Roundhill Way; Broomfield; Pond Meadow; Homestall; Dunmore; Cabell Road and Foxburrows Avenue.
The council said the lower speed limit will be “self-enforced”. New road markings and signs will be added, but no speed cameras. Although Surrey Police will be consulted on the plans, there is no expectation they will provide extra enforcement above what is usual.
The scheme is being funded by the local county councillors (ITS) Integrated Transport Safety Improvement fund.
Information online stressed that action should not wait for someone to be hurt: slower traffic means fewer crashes, and those that do happen are less severe.
Plans and maps for each scheme are now available online, and residents living in or near the affected roads are being encouraged to take part in the consultation and share their feedback. Residents can comment on the scheme until March 26.

It’s just as well that we have a Unitary Authority coming where services sit under one roof and not two.
What is the priority in Park Barn and Westborough? It’s not 20mph signs – it’s quite clearly what the Guildford Dragon has been reporting on for years and that is the state of the social housing stock which is quite literally falling down or sitting empty. Shameful stuff.
Please elect people who will prioritise taxpayers’ money wisely.

A 20 mph limit in Park Barn is a great idea. This will make the area safer and more pleasant for residents.
Cabell Road will need speed cameras to enforce this as quite a few people drive dangerously fast along it.
The speeding issues around Park Barn are a high priority which can be resolved for a relatively small cost; putting up a few signs is a drop in the ocean compared to the costs of dealing with the building issues, and the two things are from totally different budgets from different councils.
Why did Angela Richardson’s party not sort out the housing stock problem when in control of GBC?
Doesn’t she know that the 20mph project is delivered by SCC which is under Conservative control, not GBC?

To the last two points, is Dave Phillips saying that local representatives have no say in their area only the majority ruling party of whichever council? Or can local councillors help lobby and decide on priorities for their area? Which one is it? Is he saying that Conservative run SCC have imposed the 20mph consultation against the local councillors wishes? He can’t have it both ways.
I hate to be the one to tell him that the Lib Dems have been in charge or power sharing at GBC for almost seven years now. He’ll be even more shocked that one of the local Park Barn councillors has held the Housing portfolio which has seen both failure of delivery and a fraud scandal with millions overspent and not a lot to show for it.
I reiterate my previous point that this area isn’t getting the representation it deserves.

There have been lots of piecemeal announcements of these proposed 20 mph speed limits by Surrey County Council. Parkbarn and Westborough, Stoughton and Bellfields, Tormead area, Burpham, Bushy Hill, Merrow and Merrow Park, Artington and Onslow Village. I may have missed some but basically the whole of Guildford Borough other than A roads.

Nobody said it better than Brenda from Bristol in 2017. “Oh you’re joking – Not another one!”

There are more important things we coukd be spending our money on. We already have humps going down Park Barn Drive to slow everyone down and the roads are in such a mess anyway the potholes slow you down. Also, traffic queues are so long in the mornings.
I’m sure they could put some money aside fo electric cars so that cars could be charged in communal car parks instead of having to go to Tesco to charge for two hours.
