A queue of people formed outside Kings College in Park Barn this morning (December 6) all eager to get in to browse the books in the new community library, which opened its door for the first time.

The library is a project between Kings College and the Westborough and Park Barn Community Association and everyone was pleased at the support for it on the first day.

A large room at the school in Southway has been aside for the library of donated books. It will be open to all members of the community every Friday during school term time between 10am and noon.

The chairman of the Westborough and Park Barn Community Association, Wayne McShane, was delighted with those who went along. He said: “It is working out well, but it is one step at a time at the moment. We require more books to be donated as there is plenty of room to add extra shelving.”

As well as all the books, there are comfortable chairs and also beanbags for younger children to sit on. Wayne added: “We hope people will see the library as a place where they can drop in, spent a while browsing and perhaps have a chat with others at the same time.”

The principal of Kings College, Kate Carriett, was also extremely happy at seeing a busy morning of book borrowing. She said that many of the paperbacks have been donated by her staff, admitting: “Quite a lot of crime novels, it appears!”

She also said she was pleased to see people from all age groups coming along to check out what the library has to offer.

The school is also helping by providing librarians, manly sixth-formers when they have free periods. However, it is hoped that volunteers may come from the community. If you would like to volunteer, call Wayne McShane on 01483 837736, or call the school on 01483 458956. Call the same numbers if you have books you would like to donate. All kinds, fiction and non-fiction are wanted.

The names of those who borrowed a book today, December 6, and those who do the same next Friday, will be entered into a free draw with prizes that include tickets to G Live, Guildford Flames ice hockey team, Surrey Sports Park, Cafe Rouge, the Holiday Inn, Toni & Guy hair stylists and more… Get along and borrow a book or two.

Well done to the Park Barn & Westborough Community Association and Kings College for working together with the community to provide this fabulous new Community Library!

I attended the opening this morning and there were people of all ages there, some arriving with books to donate and children leaving with armfuls of books to enjoy at home.

Thank you to the Guildford Dragon for helping to spread the word!

Kings College is central to its community and welcomes everybody, young or not-so-young, to share the new library facility.

If there are any suggestions from the community as to how the facility might be enhanced, please let us know.

Thanks to everybody who made the library come to life, to those that attended and those who will sustain our library.
