The A3 “Cockcrow Bridge” was officially opened yesterday (May 25).

The green bridge, planted with heathland flora, cost £3.7 million to built – just over one per cent of the overall £317 million cost of the M25, Junction 10 expansion.

Measuring 68 metres in length and 30 metres wide the newly opened bridge links Wisley & Ockham Commons with other common land to create a five kilometre circular walk through four previously hard to access parcels of land.

The bridge with metalled access way and, in parallel, the wider, planted up, heathland section.

The heathland bridge it is designed to help animals small and large, including snakes and toads to safely cross the A3. The sides are designed to reduce noise and prevent those crossing, which including humans, from seeing the traffic.

One observer said: “It has a surreal effect that with the help of heathers, sand and bits of timber it feels like you are on the heath itself.”

A cattle grid encourages wildlife to prefer the planted up route.

Only authorised motor vehicles may use the bridge but walkers and ramblers, cyclists and horse riders may cross. There is a cattle grid on the north side which is easily avoided using a gate and it appears that humans are being discouraged to use the planted heathland half of the bridge.

There are two car parks close by off Old Lane. The nearest to the bridge is at Ockham Bites cafe.
