The new Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Guildford are now in place, following the annual Mayor Making council meeting at the Guildhall yesterday (May 1).

The new mayor for the next 12 months is Cllr Diana Lockyer-Nibbs (Con, Normandy).

Cllr Lockyer-Nibbs became councillor for Normandy ward in 1999 and has lived in Guildford for over 50 years. She has served on the planning committee and the Guildford Local Committee with Surrey County Council.

The Mayor’s chosen charity for 2013-14 is Surrey Association for Visual Impairment (SAVI). Cllr Lockyer Nibbs, herself developed macular disease in both eyes over 10 years ago and has received great support from the charity.

She is committed to raising the profile of children’s access to play with a particular focus on inclusion and will set up an appeal to support the provision of flexible play equipment for those with different physical and sensory impairment.

The Deputy Mayor is Cllr David Elms (Con), a former firefighter, who is ward councillor for Worplesdon.

The mayoral team’s role in Guildford is mainly ceremonial, attending events and functions throughout the borough but the Mayor will also preside over, and chair, all the full meetings of the council at Millmead.
