The Gurkha Kitchen is a new Nepalese cuisine restaurant, also offering traditional curries, that has just opened at 111 Aldershot Road (just up from Woodbridge Hill), Guildford.

This family owned restaurant offers delicious hot and aromatic dishes in a fresh modern-style restaurant, and of course takeaways too.

Co-owner Madhab Raj Uprety says the style of food they offer has less sugar than often found in, for example korma dishes, and are less oily too.

Nepalese cuisine is a fusion of styles and much influenced by the countries that border Nepal – India and China.

Therefore, there is much to chose from on the menu. Starters include Momo dumplings – steamed chicken, lamb, or vegetables with Nepali spices served with a fresh home-made achaar (pickle).

And, deep fried Tilapia fish marinated with ginger, garlic and spices, served with a special sauce. Or cubes of Nepalese cottage cheese imbued with a touch of herbs and spice then gently glazed in the clay oven.

For mains, for example, there is the hot Rato Piro Lamb: tender pieces of boneless lamb cooked with a hot and spicy sauce prepared from the recipes of the legendary sherpas. And, Nepalese Green Chicken: tender pieces of clay oven chicken, cooked with fresh mint, coriander, green peppercorn with ginger and garlic. This is the most popular traditional chicken curry in Nepal.

There is also Nepalese Chow Chow: stir-fried noodles with either chicken, lamb or vegetables.

Classic curry dishes that are much-loved favourites include: korma, tikka masala, dhansak, rogan josh, madras, jalfrezi and more.

All the usual side dishes, rices and breads are, as one would expect, on the menu. The licensed restaurant offers a wide range of drinks including Golden Everest Nepalese lager, that goes fine with a curry!

Mohan is the restaurant manager and the head chef is Jagtar. He comes to the restaurant with 35 years’ experience of creating Nepalese food. He has worked at restaurants in London and for the past eight years has been a chef at the Uprey family’s other established restaurant, the New Gurkha Kitchen, 75 High Street, Reigate, that opened in 2013.

For several years previously, there had been a takeaway serving curries at the Gurkha Kitchen’s Aldershot Road premises. Madhab and his family took over that business in December 2022, continuing to offers takeaways while planning and getting the new restaurant ready to open. Another of the three chefs is Rabin, who knows the place well, as he has worked there under the previous owners.

Madhab is also well known to people who use the parade of shops here on Aldershot Road, as he and his family run the Spirits off-licence, there since 2010.

Last week I visited the Gurkha Kitchen and had a “take out”. It was one of the best meals I have had for years. Also I was eating for one, but the meal sizes were enough for the next day.

Very much value for money. I hope to take a group back for a meal.
