New Woking Road toucan crossing

There is a new pedestrian crossing on the A320 Woking Road, by Bellfields Estate.

Work to install the toucan crossing was completed by Guildford Borough Council this week and it is now in operation.

Located between Old Woking Road and Fir Tree Road, the crossing allows pedestrians and cyclists to cross at the same time. It forms part of the wider Weyside Urban Village regeneration highway improvements, which are designed to support future development and encourage sustainable travel.

The next phase

A further phase of preparatory work will commence on Bellfields Road tomorrow  (July 23). The road, currently a cul-de-sac, will become an important access route into the new development, ultimately connecting to the wider road network.

The works will take approximately nine weeks to complete and include:

  • A raised table junction near Weyfield Primary Academy to slow traffic and ensure pedestrian safety.
  • Installation of traffic bollards to prevent vehicles from parking on footways.
  • Rearranged on-street parking to allow safe two-way traffic.

A CGI of the improvements about to be made in Bellfields Road.

Traffic management will be in place, including two-way traffic lights to keep the road open and accessible at all times.

The footpath running alongside Weyfield Primary Academy and Waterside Road, will be closed for the duration of the works and a signed diversion will be in place.

Cllr Tom Hunt

Cllr Tom Hunt (Lib Dem, St Nicolas), deputy leader and Lead Councillor for Economy and Place, said: “These improvements are part of a coordinated transport strategy designed to mitigate the impact of the Weyside Urban Village development and improve safety for all road users.

“We appreciate that the works may cause temporary inconvenience for some residents, but they are essential to the success of the Weyside Urban Village scheme. We’re doing all we can to limit disruption while this work is carried out.”
