Normandy Horse Fatalities – Police Still Seeking Witnesses

Surrey Police is appealing for witnesses following a collision involving a car, two horses and two riders in Normandy last week, Sunday, 26 November (2017).

The collision happened at around 9am in Westwood Lane near the crossroads with Flexford Road in Normandy, west of Guildford. The two riders, a woman in her 50’s and a girl in her early teens sustained minor injuries. The woman was taken to hospital as a precaution.

The two horses had to be put down at the scene by a vet due to their injuries. The driver of the car was unharmed. The road was closed for a number of hours.

Police have now said that the driver, a woman in her 20s, has been reported for summons for driving without due care and attention. A decision will be made in due course as to whether she will be prosecuted.

Officers are urging anybody who witnessed the collision to call 101 quoting, P17297605.

Local horsewoman Lisa Wright said of the incident: “This accident was horrendous, the worst we have seen for years. Whilst most of the horse community would like to thank the drivers that do pass us ‘wide and slow’ this accident reiterates the carelessness of some drivers.

“Please, if you are passing a horse and rider, slow down and take care, no one wants an accident and I’m sure you don’t want 600kg of horse on your car bonnet.

“I’ve noticed an outpouring of sadness and anger on the Surrey Horse and Pony FaceBook page this week and thousands sharing this news story. I understand a march is being organised to create awareness for cars and riders in the new year.”
