Notice: Amnesty International’s Card Signing Events

The Guildford group of Amnesty International is organising its annual Write for Rights campaign in the town centre to send greetings cards to prisoners of conscience and victims of injustice across the world.

There will be refreshments available at the two card-signing events, one on Saturday, December 11, from 10am to noon in Zero Climate Hub at the bottom of North Street and the second in St Nicolas Church hall on Monday, December 13, from 6.30pm to 9pm.

The secretary of Amnesty International’s Guildford branch, Marilyn Jarrett, said: “We would love to see you at one or both of the events.

“Just drop in briefly if you want or if you can’t make those dates, you can write cards from home. Addresses and other details are on the Amnesty website: Write for Rights 2021.

“We send messages of hope and solidarity to political prisoners falsely detained, many in cruel circumstances, and many imprisoned for defending the rights of fellow citizens.

“We also write to political and prison authorities urging them to release these prisoners. It succeeds because they are amazed at the sacks full of cards their detainees receive, and realise that the injustice they inflict is well-known.

“Amnesty International conducts an enormous amount of research into these cases and our campaign usually succeeds in releasing a good percentage or at least improves the circumstances of others.”
