Walkers of all ages are invited to become an “angel” for the day by taking part in a sponsored walk following the ancient route of pilgrims along the North Downs Way.

This Saturday, September 28, as part of the annual Guildford Walkfest, the town chaplain, the Revd Noelle Coe, and former Mayor of Guildford, Gordon Jackson, and other representatives from local organisations will trek from Guildford to Dorking, to raise funds for Guildford Street Angels.

‘Angels’ along the Pilgrims’ Way!

Guildford Street Angels are better known for patrolling the town centre, bringing a calming presence to the night-time economy, than rambling across some of the county’s most glorious local countryside.

Guildford ‘s Walkfest is now in its 12th year and has grown from two weeks to a full month of walks.

The walks are themed; some highlighting our heritage, some our natural world, while others are created just to take in a special view.

The festival is run by volunteers from all the different walking groups represented in the borough, including the Surrey Hills Society who will be supporting the Street Angels in their sponsored walk.

The Revd Noelle Coe said “It’s a challenging time for the vulnerable in our locality. The vibrant night time economy of our town has seen a growth in homelessness, and we are very conscious of the increase risk of knife crime.

“Our volunteer angels seek to reassure, offer practical help and enable people to get home safely.

“We give flip flops for broken heels, foil blankets to protect against hypothermia, offer a listening ear, recharge mobile phones and signpost people to other services.

“We are delighted to have been selected to be Guildford Walkfest’s charity of the year and are looking forward to this spectacular walk.

“We would like to invite sponsors to support the valuable work of Guildford’s Street Angels. We hope to have a “host of angels” treading this ancient path, and a few surprises along the way, including handing out lollipops to those we meet en route!”
