The Great Barn at Wanborough is one of the very few buildings in and around Guildford that will be open during this year’s Heritage Open Days weekend from September 12 and 13, 2pm to 5pm.

You can see the list of Guildford Heritage Day attractions in The Dragon article here.

A chance to see inside the 630-year-old Great Barn at Wanborough.

And a late addition to the Heritage Weekend list is Guildford Cathedral that says it would “love people to join them for a socially distanced open day on Saturday, September 12”.

There will be tours of the tower and guided tours.

If you want to attend, make a booking on the website link here. The cathedral shop and café will be open until 4pm.

A fine view of Guildford Cathedral seen from The Mount.

Wanborough’s Great Barn volunteers say that they have gone to great lengths to work within government guidelines to deliver a Covid-secure environment for visitors and stewards alike.

Inside the Great Barn visitors can relax as numbers will be limited and masks must be worn. It is worth making the short journey from Guildford to admire up close the 630-ear-old huge wooden structure, built using trees from the forest of Windsor.

Inside Wanborough Barn

There is a new one-way system around the Great Barn that features the 10,000 Years of History exhibition.

You can read about the barrow burial chamber on the Hog’s Back that gave Wanborough its name, the 20th-century looters that robbed the Celtic and Roman temples nearby of millions of £s, and how the Special Operations Executive (SOE) took over Wanborough during the Second World War to train agents before they were dropped behind Nazi lines.

It is just off the A31 between Guildford and Farnham. Car parking and entrance is of course free.

Due to Covid restrictions, no toilets are available. For more details, go to website here.
