As 2019 comes to a close, Guildford Shakespeare Company celebrates its 13th year in Guildford, encouraging a new way to experience theatre-going and arts engagement.
This year saw the staging of five Shakespeare titles, in five different venues.
Autumn 2019 also saw their first London production, when All’s Well that Ends Well transferred from Guildford to the Jermyn Street Theatre in Piccadilly.
Over 3,200 individuals attended GSC workshops and performances and benefited from therapy sessions and 47 schools were visited with bespoke workshops and touring productions, bringing a first-hand professional approach to Shakespeare to primary schools, secondary schools and further education institutes across the South East.
Guildford Shakespeare company also created 120 jobs for artists and creative professionals.
In January 2020, the company will fulfil a long-held ambition to move into a long-term home at The GreenArk on Lido Road, on the fringes of Stoke Park in Guildford.
Their next production, Macbeth, will take place at Holy Trinity Church, from Saturday, February 8 to Saturday, February 29, 2020.
Next year’s programme will also see She Stoops to Conquer performed in Guildford Castle Grounds, from Thursday, June 11 to Saturday, June 27 and As You Like It staged at a new venue for the group, Gosden House in Bramley, from Friday, July 10 to Saturday, July 25, 2020.
In the spring term, those looking for new interests in 2020 can sign up to a GSC course for adults. The Bard’s not that Hard will run from Tuesday, January 14 to Tuesday, March 24. Running alongside the winter production, attendees will explore Macbeth.
These courses are delivered by theatre professionals, with regular visits from the production’s creatives and actors. The play will be explored through close reading, group discussion and practical exercises. Each term culminates in a celebration of the term’s discoveries with wine and friends.
