Notice: Join Surrey Hills Choirs For Festive Concerts This Christmas

Updated on: 7 Nov, 2018

The Surrey Hills choirs are presenting two concerts this December, each with their own distinct character.

The first concert, at 6pm on Saturday, December 8 at Cranleigh Village Hall, is a family friendly event for everyone, from babies to great grandparents.

Everyone is welcome at this relaxed family concert, featuring performers from age six to 60, from all four of the Surrey Hills Choirs – Training Choir, Young Voices, Singers and Chamber Choir.

The programme will include performances from each choir, as well as joint items to produce an amazing ‘wall of sound’. The little ones from the Training Choir will perform the humorous If I Only Had A Brain from The Wizard of Oz, while the Young Voices will entertain with a fully choreographed Mary Poppins medley, the 2017 hit song Havana and the very popular A Million Dreams from The Greatest Showman.

The un-auditioned, but very talented “Mum’s” choir, the Surrey Hills Singers, may move you to tears with the Disneyesque Seal Lullaby by popular contemporary composer Eric Whitacre and get you bopping in your seats with Mercy, by Duffy.

Finally, its experienced and award winning Surrey Hills Chamber Choir, will perform three songs on a star theme –  Stars by Esenvalds, unusually accompanied by the sound of twinkling stars played on wine glasses, Christus est Stella (Christ is the morning star) by local composer Will Todd and Kate Rusby’s ballad Underneath the Stars. The concert will open with all choirs singing one of the most popular songs of the moment, The Greatest Show.

Starting with the uplifting song Christmastime, the second section of the concert will take you into the festive season with a variety of songs and carols, interspersed with traditional audience carols.

Tickets for Saturday, December 8 cost £12 for adults and £3 for children (16 and under). Family tickets for five adults at £50 are available on request.

If you prefer a more sophisticated concert, then join the adult choirs for a candlelit concert at 8pm on Sunday, December 9, in the magnificent setting of St Nicolas Church in Guildford.

In addition to the songs sung on Saturday, the two choirs will sing Sing We Bow of Christmas, Harold Darke’s version of In The Bleak Midwinter, Alexander L’Estrange’s Epiphany Carol and the very festive Fantasia On Christmas Carols – a cycle of traditional carols arranged by Ralph Vaughan Williams, with baritone soloist Mike Winterbotham.

As is the Surrey Hills custom, great care has been given to staging each song to give the audience different visual and aural experiences of the performances. Tickets cost £12 for adults and £5 for children (16 and under).

Tickets for both concerts include a programme, wine and refreshments and are available online at http://surreyhillschoirs.uk/wp/ until 9pm the night before the performance.

After the online ticketing closes, email graham.webb@tangleweave.co.uk or call 07513 523933.
