Send and Ripley History Society was founded in 1975 and in the early days of its existence local memories were recorded from older residents, going back to the early part of the 20th century.
From these recordings, it has extracted memories of games and pastimes, to create a new display.
The exhibition highlights some of these pastimes, including skating, cycling, fishing and boating and features local memories, photos and artefacts from before the war – and some from before the first world war. There are also some fascinating pictures of Ripley Fair, which seems to have been a social highlight.
Wheeling’, a cycling board game featuring the Anchor pub in Ripley is on display, as is a fascinating wooden artefact from a game called Knur and Spell. A reproduction of this game is available to be played with and there are lots of other games to try – marbles, cup and ball, skipping, hopscotch and more.
It also plans to open the air-raid shelter, which is next to the museum, weather permitting.
The exhibition runs every Saturday from 10am to 12.30pm, until the end of September.
