The Surrey Hills Singers has a reputation for producing engaging and entertaining performances and in September they will be looking for new members to swell their numbers.
Their Ladies Daytime Singing group was founded for busy young mothers but now the choir comprises women of all ages who appreciate the attributes that singing in a choir can bring – mental stimulation, physical health, friendship, learning to improve their singing, and the joy of creating a wonderful sound in harmony.
The choir is unauditioned and sings all styles of songs. All ladies are welcome to join – not just mothers – and mothers are welcome to bring babies and pre-school children. Members do not need to read music, as mp3 part files are made available to back up rehearsals and learn on the go.
The choir invites ladies to go along and sing for a trial session or two, or just sit and listen if you prefer. Rehearsals are held on Monday mornings from 9.45am to 12pm at Ewhurst Baptist Church, The Street, Ewhurst and start on Monday, September 16.
Surrey Hills Singing School also caters for children, either singing with their parents in an adult choir or in the Young Voices or Training Choir.
Two choirs for children rehearse at St Cuthbert Mayne Primary School in St Nicolas Avenue in Cranleigh after school on Mondays, starting on Monday, September 9.
Children from any school are welcome. As well as using songs and games to teach singing and musicianship, members of the Training Choir (six to seven years old) also learn repertoire to perform at the Surrey Hills concerts. Rehearsals are from 3.30pm to 4.15pm.
At around the age of eight (or in Year 4, depending on the individual) children can progress to the Young Voices Choir. These rehearsals are held between 4.15pm and 5.30pm.
For experienced singers, Surrey Hills Chamber Choir is an auditioned choir. As a small mixed-voice choir, every voice counts, and singers are welcome who enjoy this type of challenge and commitment. The choir performs all styles of music and, as winners of a number of competitions, works hard to achieve high standards, focussing on communication by predominantly performing from memory and unconducted.
Rehearsals for the Chamber Choir are held on Wednesday evenings at 7.30pm at the United Reformed Church in Portsmouth Road, Guildford, starting on Wednesday, September 11. There are some vacancies in each section, particularly for experienced basses.
This season the Surrey Hills Chamber Choir will be performing in Manchester, Lucca and Cardiff, as well as in a Christmas concert on Sunday, December 8.
