On Tuesday, July 10, Dr Mary Alexander will give a talk entitled ‘Digging into the Past: Holy Trinity’s One Thousand Years of History’ at the Trinity Centre in Guildford.
Her talk promises to unlock the secrets of Holy Trinity Church’s 1,000-year history, including the churchyard, the rectory, the houses along the eastern side of the churchyard and the developments on the High Street.
It is also anticipated that Mary will be able to report on recent archaeological studies, including the use of ground-penetrating radar within the church, to search for the ‘lost crypt’.
Mary Alexander joined Guildford Museum in 1979 with a degree in archaeology and a background of local excavations, including the dig on the site of Guildford’s medieval friary.
Over the following 33 years, she built up a compendious knowledge of the museum’s collections, and researched aspects of local history which led to a number of publications, a PhD and her election as a fellow of the Society of Antiquaries.
When Mary retired in 2012 she was the collections officer for Guildford Museum, since when she has been researching and writing books on Guildford’s history.
Most recently Mary has been involved in organising events for the centenary of the First World War, focussing on the two churches of Holy Trinity and St Mary’s and how the war was remembered in Guildford.
The talk starts at 7.30pm and is the third (of four) in the series of Holy Trinity’s Heritage Lectures. Admission is free.
