The local project that supports community involvement, Joining In!, is expanding to cover the Stoke area of Guildford.
Like Joining In! in Westborough and Park Barn and in Ash, Ash Vale and Tongham, it aims to bring together voluntary and community groups in the local community and to help them find local volunteers so that their organisations can continue to grow.
The project is also there to offer support in accessing information and advice as well as encouraging more local people to get involved. It is managed by Voluntary Action South West Surrey, that has its Guildford volunteer centre in Castle Street.
The co-ordinator for Joining In! Stoke, that covers Bellfields and Slyfield is Helen Linnell.
Helen was born and bought up in Guildford and has spent the last 11 years working as a project fundraising manager and director for a variety of local and national charities, as well as developing and project managing a variety of successful community and volunteering projects.
She says: “I am very proud to be part of such a fantastic project and I am thoroughly enjoying getting to know so many of the groups and organisations that currently work in the Stoke community.
“Our project is focused on creating a cohesive community network, whereby we can support groups and residents to assist each other in making Stoke a great place in which to live.
“It would be fantastic to see small groups, local residents and larger organisations supporting each other via skills and advice sharing as well as through accessing volunteering support or opportunities.
“Our new Joining In! Stoke directory will be available in 2015 and I would love to hear from you if you would like your group or organisation to be listed in it or if you would like more information or advice on volunteering or funding opportunities.
“If you have any activities or events coming up, that you would like us to promote or list on the Joining In! website, please also get in touch.
“We are holding an informal coffee morning to launch the project on November 20 at the Lockwood centre in Slyfield and would love as many Stoke-based groups and organisations to come along as possible. Watch this space for more information!
