Guildford Borough Council has been marking National Tree Week by celebrating the vital role trees play in our environment and wellbeing.

Among the projects taking place at present is the creation of a new community orchard in Park Barn, which the council is supporting.

“Trees are the lungs of our borough,” says Angela Goodwin, Lead  Councillor for Environment and Recreation. “They clean our air, support wildlife and biodiversity and help us tackle climate change.”

The council’s main priority at present is to preserve and protect the borough’s existing tree stock, ensuring that green spaces remain healthy and resilient.

Trees are vital because they absorb carbon dioxide, improve air quality, reduce flooding and provide vital habitats for wildlife.

The council says: “They also make our towns and countryside more beautiful and boost wellbeing by creating spaces for relaxation and recreation. Protecting and caring for trees is one of the most effective ways we can tackle climate change and support nature, says the council.”

Cllr Angela Goodwin.

Cllr Goodwin said: “National Tree Week is a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the vital role trees play in our lives and the incredible work our teams do all year to protect and care for them.”

She added: “We’re excited to support the creation of a new community orchard in Park Barn, in partnership with COPSE (Community Orchard Project South East) and Surrey Wildlife Trust.

“Planting for this orchard will take place next week. This project is a fantastic way to boost biodiversity, tackle climate change and create a space for the community to enjoy for years to come.”

The council is calling on residents to help protect Guildford’s trees. You can:

This year the council’s parks and environmental teams have carried out:

  • 1,104 individual tree inspections
  • 156 site inspections

These checks help to monitor tree health, manage risks and safeguard biodiversity across Guildford.

National Tree Week has been running from from November 22 and marks the start of the winter tree planting season. This nationwide initiative is led by The Tree Council.
