Plenty Of Scope To Learn New Things At The Guildford Institute

The Guildford Institute in Ward Street has published its summer term programme of courses and events. Originally founded to foster the concept of ‘self improvement’, there is plenty of scope to learn new things.

The Wednesday afternoon talks programme features speakers on the fascinating mysteries of ‘memory’, pointers on how to manage stress, and advice on whether a healthy diet can reduce the risk of dementia.

Other talks will cover a variety of topics, including an insight into the history of Guildford Cathedral, the symbolism of the pharmaceutical business, and the importance of art schools as instruments for social mobility. Booking for the Wednesday afternoon talks is essential as the programme is always popular and seats fill up fast.

A very special event will mark the culmination of the Institute’s 125th anniversary celebrations, when The Guildford Dragon NEWS’ David Rose will give an illustrated talk looking at the evolution of the institute. At this event an anniversary time capsule will be sealed and stored in the institute’s archive, to be opened after another 25 years.

Celebrating this summer’s royal wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle is another special event – a talk which will look back at the traditions of marriage and also includes a celebratory cream tea.

There are opportunities to join organised visits outside Guildford with trips to Highgate Cemetery and Sir John Soane’s Museum in London, Pallant House Gallery in Chichester and Highclere Castle, the location for TV’s Downton Abbey.

The institute’s course programme will run throughout the summer and presents opportunities to learn new skills. It includes flower arranging sessions, a sushi workshop, language classes and workshops to help you solve cryptic crosswords.

Popular art tutor Clare Harrison will run one-off afternoon workshops in her summer school sessions and completely new for the summer term is a four-part celebration of cinema’s emotional power and a short course on climate change will be delivered by eminent marine geologist and oceanographer Dr Colin Summerhayes.
