Police Shut Down 11 Drug Networks in Surrey During Week-long Operation

Twenty-eight arrests were made and 11 drug networks closed down across Surrey during a week of intensive police activity during early March.

Drugs were seized along with weapons including two firearms, knives, machetes and swords.

The operation during “County Lines Intensification Week” ran from March 2-8.

County lines is a term used for organised illegal drug-dealing networks who move drugs between areas using dedicated phone lines, often relying on violence, exploitation and the coercion of vulnerable people, including children, to run their operations.

Police said the week of targeted action in Surrey saw some of the best results to date including:

  • 28 arrests
  • 11 drug lines shut down
  • Approximately £28,000 cash seized
  • Seizure of Class A drugs including crack, heroin, and cocaine
  • Seizure of cannabis, fentanyl and ketamine
  • Eight weapons – including knifes, machete and swords – removed from streets
  • Two firearms seized
  • Assets seized: designer goods including luxury watches

In addition, various educational events took place during the week of the operation including training for key figures in 151 schools in Surrey, engagement stands at schools and town centres, engagement with more than 260 pupils in Surrey schools, and education for hotel staff.

There were proactive operations at Guildford Railway Station, Epsom, and Highdown Prison, Sutton.

The activities were led by the National County Lines Coordination Centre (NCLCC).

Surrey joined up with neighbouring forces to conduct targeted activity combining enforcement, safeguarding, and partnership work with charities and local agencies.

County line and drug harm coordinator Alex Gillot said: “This was the 16th occasion we have concentrated resources to the dedicated week of action to tackle County Drugs lines and associated harm.

“County Lines have a devastating impact on communities which brings serious harm to people, not just through the supply of drugs, but also the associated violence and exploitation.

“Our dedicated County Drug Line unit Centurion recently concluded their investigation into a Class A drug supply network operating in East Surrey and the surrounding areas. The operation resulted in 12 men being jailed.”

Well done Surrey Police and the neighbouring forces for the enormous effort that must have gone into these raids recently. However, will they be backed up by realistically deterrent sentences once those arrested and charged reach the courts? I fear not.

The income from this unlawful activity is such that, if granted bail or a non-deterrent sentence, the perpetrators, who are not usually the masterminds, will return to their activities within weeks if not days.

Anyway, thank you to those hard working police officers, at least you tried.
